In total, 2,605 fires were recorded between January and February. In rural areas and indigenous communities, the damage is mounting. The period of drought experienced in the state is aggravated by El Niño, a meteorological phenomenon that raises temperatures. The damage caused by the drought and the fires has not yet been fully accounted for throughout the state, says the state Civil Defence. In Cantá, in the north of the state, the Malacacheta indigenous community is facing the impacts of the fires, which have destroyed crops and even a house.
