Houses destroyed, entire plantations devastated and animals charred. The outbreaks of fire in Roraima have been affecting the state since the end of January and add to the effects of the drought. In total, 2,605 fires were recorded between January and February. In rural areas and indigenous communities, the damage is mounting. The period of drought experienced in the state is aggravated by El Niño, a meteorological phenomenon that raises temperatures. In addition, experts link climate change and the release of burning areas by the state government as aggravating factors. The damage caused by the drought and the fires has not yet been fully accounted for throughout the state, says the state Civil Defence. In Cantá, in the north of the state, the Malacacheta indigenous community is facing the impacts of the fires, which have destroyed crops and even a house.
