The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) has discovered that of the 26 logging companies set up around Santo Antônio do Matupi, a district of Manicoré, 11 were operating without authorisation. Of these, nine have so far been destroyed in the region in the south of Amazonas. According to the institute, the logging is taking place on indigenous land. Ibama is also investigating logging companies that have a licence to operate. Agents discovered that some of them were pretending that the timber they were harvesting was from authorised management plans. However, according to the investigations, the companies were illegally exploiting indigenous lands of the Tenharim people.
