Guarana is a typical Amazonian fruit, found in Brazil and Venezuela. It is small and red, similar to a pitanga, and has a caffeine-like substance (guaraine). Because of this stimulating property, it is used to make syrups, bars, powders and soft drinks. Its stimulating properties increase endurance in mental and muscular endeavours, as well as reducing fatigue. The largest producer of the fruit in Brazil is the state of Bahia, where its cultivation is of great socio-economic importance. The fruit can be used to produce syrups and soft drinks.
