Guarana is a typical Amazonian fruit, found in Brazil and Venezuela. It is small and red, similar to pitanga, and has a substance similar to caffeine (guaraine). Because of this stimulating property, it is used to make syrups, bars, powders and soft drinks. Its stimulating properties increase endurance in mental and muscular endeavours, as well as reducing fatigue. The largest producer of the fruit in Brazil is the state of Bahia, where cultivation is of great socio-economic importance. The drying process is one of the final stages for selling the produce to manufacturers.
