Researchers from Ufam, the Federal University of Amazonas, together with the Federal Police are searching management areas for the species of wood most traded on the market. Small samples are taken from them to be studied in the laboratory. The data obtained will allow the typology to be defined, i.e. the species of wood that is being commercialised, as well as geographically locating the exact point where the wood was extracted. More than a thousand samples have already been collected from species such as maçaranduba, red angelim and cupiúba, the types most commonly used in construction and the furniture industry. The work is being carried out to confirm that the wood extracted came from the source declared in the documentation and thus prevent deforestation and illegal exploitation.
