RONDÔNIA, BRAZIL - A low-magnitude earthquake struck the Brazilian state of Rondônia on Sunday night (22), causing alarm among residents in several towns.
At least five municipalities in the state's interior reported feeling the tremor, which was recorded by home surveillance cameras capturing the exact moment of the seismic activity.
Residents described moments of anxiety as the tremor shook homes. In Rio Preto do Oeste, where the quake’s epicenter was located, windows rattled and a loud noise “like thunder” was heard, according to a local resident.
The Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR) reported the earthquake occurred at approximately 7:44 p.m. local time.
According to RSBR, the tremor was also felt in Ji-Paraná, Teixeirópolis, Jaru, and Vale do Paraíso.
The last recorded earthquake in Rondônia occurred in May 2023, in the municipality of Parecis, with a magnitude of 2.5.
