PALMAS, BRAZIL – Part of a farm herd died after a lightning strike hit the pasture where the animals were during a heavy rainstorm on Monday (6) in the municipality of Lizarda, in the interior of Tocantins state, northern Brazil. According to the owner, 16 cows and heifers died from the electric shock.

A video shows around ten cattle lying near a tree, where they were likely sheltering during the storm. The farmer said there were no other losses on the property besides the electrocuted animals.

According to Energisa, the region’s power utility, more than 560,000 lightning strikes hit the state in March 2026 alone. Open areas, such as pastures, are high-risk locations for lightning strikes.
