PALMAS, BRAZIL - A caiman hatchling was rescued by volunteer civilian firefighters from the outdoor area of a school in the municipality of Augustinópolis, in Brazil’s Tocantins state, last Friday (10). After the animal was identified, the school contacted the Military Police, which called in the firefighter team to carry out the rescue and ensure its proper release.
Videos show the volunteer responders capturing the animal within the school premises. The caiman was released about five kilometers away in an area with a stream, vegetation and forest, considered a natural habitat for the species.
The case draws attention as it marks the second incident involving wild animals in an urban area within the same week. On Wednesday (8), the same volunteer firefighter team rescued and released a snake of the anaconda species from the outdoor area of a health unit.
