MACAPÁ, BRAZIL - A yellow anaconda (Eunectes notaeus), measuring approximately 2.5 meters, startled visitors at a bathing site in the municipality of Porto Grande, in Amapá state, at night. Residents who recorded the animal on video alerted the Fire Department, which removed it and safely relocated it to a habitat away from human circulation.
A rescue official said that, because it was an anaconda — not a boa constrictor —, the animal was released in a flooded area, far from the urban zone. The anaconda is one of the largest snakes in the world and inhabits rivers, streams and wetlands across the Amazon region.
Despite its impressive size, it is non-venomous. It kills its prey by constriction, coiling its body around the victim until circulation is cut off.
