Images recorded by residents show a curious visitor in a floodplain area located in the Congós neighborhood, in Macapá. In one of the recordings, the otter appears displaying typical hunting behavior while confronting another animal.
The scene may come as a surprise, but it is not uncommon. The wetland areas of Macapá are directly influenced by fluctuations in the water level of the Amazon River, which facilitates the arrival of the species.
The animal seen in the footage is a neotropical otter, a species that does not pose a risk to people. Specialists recommend that residents only observe and record the animal from a safe distance. Feeding or attempting to approach the otter is not advised.
