PARINTINS, BRAZIL — Emotion filled the Curralzinho da Baixa do São José on Wednesday night (June 24) during the traditional Saint John Litany. Accompanied by prayers and centuries-old hymns sung by devotees, the venue was immersed in an atmosphere of deep reverence and spirituality.
The celebration reinforces the historical, cultural and popular ties that define the legacy of Boi-Bumbá Garantido in Parintins. The occasion commemorates the century-old vow made by the founder of the “People’s Ox,” Lindolfo Monteverde, to Saint John the Baptist and draws thousands of red-and-white supporters and visitors through the streets of the municipality.
A sea of red-and-white-clad participants marched in celebration along the city’s historic streets toward the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Amid prayers, applause and the steady rhythm of percussion, the crowd honored the “Saint of the Vow,” keeping alive the century-old tradition of celebrating Saint John, a cultural expression that has been passed down through generations.
