RIO BRANCO, BRAZIL — A fishing trip that began as another adventure on the Juruá River ended with the catch of a large catfish. Fisherman Mateus Costa, 25, and his friend Itanon Amorim, 33, caught a jaú catfish weighing approximately 60 kilograms (132 pounds) and measuring 1.46 meters (4.8 feet) during a fishing trip last Friday (14) in a rural area of Rodrigues Alves, in Acre state.

The fish was caught using a rod, fishing line and spinning reel. According to Mateus, who posted the video on social media, the jaú was hooked at around 7:40 p.m., and it took nearly two hours to pull it from the water.

The footage shows the fishermen struggling to bring the fish out of the water. After placing it in their boat, they headed to a river beach, where they removed the fish and carried it on their backs.

Amorim, who caught the fish, said the two regularly go fishing together and that, on that day, they even joked about the remote possibility of catching a jaú. According to him, the fish is expected to be eaten by their families and members of the Luzeiro riverside community in Rodrigues Alves, where both men live.

“We fought with this fish and, with the help of my friend Mateus, we managed to get it into the canoe, on top of a log that was nearby. It was very good, very enjoyable to catch a fish this size,” Amorim said.
