PALMAS, BRAZIL — Cameras installed at three watering stations in an environmental restoration area in the municipality of Cariri do Tocantins, in the southern part of the state, have captured the diversity of wildlife in Brazil’s Cerrado.

The footage shows a crab-eating fox, a deer, an owl, a vulture, two jaguars and several bird species using the site to drink water and cool off.

The structures were installed in April 2026 in a compensatory planting area. Every 15 days, teams from an environmental services company clean and replenish the watering stations.

The recordings were made throughout May. On May 27, the cameras captured two jaguars approaching one of the watering stations. Days earlier, a maned wolf had passed through the area to drink, along with several birds, including a barn owl, caracaras and a seriema.

The initiative is carried out by Rumo Logística, a freight railway operator, with support from Morro Verde Ambiental, an environmental services company.

According to the operator, the cameras were positioned to allow specialists to monitor visitation frequency, species diversity and the animals’ behavioral patterns over time.
