RONDÔNIA, BRAZIL — A mare spent about eight hours trapped inside a pit after falling into it when the cover gave way under her weight, in the municipality of Ji-Paraná, in the interior of Rondônia state. The rescue was carried out by the Fire Department, and the animal was pulled out alive.

The operation mobilized about 10 professionals and included the support of a crane, as well as teams from other municipal departments.

After being removed from the site, the mare was given a bath to remove the waste and appeared to be in apparently stable health. The Animal Protection and Welfare Department is now seeking to locate the owner, as the animal has a foal that needs to be fed and is also missing.

According to the department's rules, the mare will remain in custody for 72 hours. If the owner is not located during that period, the animal may be made available for adoption once the foal is found.

In addition, the Animal Protection and Welfare Department issued a specific recommendation to horse owners. The department emphasized the importance of keeping the animals in rural areas and properly fenced in order to protect their physical well-being and prevent new incidents.
