PARÁ, BRAZIL — A black caiman was spotted in the beach area in front of the city of Santarém, in western Pará. The animal caught the attention of residents, fishermen and people passing along the waterfront.

A video of the caiman also circulated on social media.

The Military Police (PM) were called through the Integrated Operations Center (NIOP) to check on the presence of the wild animal at the site.

According to the PM, during the inspection, people who were in the area reported the presence of the caiman. The team determined that it was a black caiman and noticed that one of the animal’s legs was weakened.

The intention, if it was possible to safely capture the animal, was to remove it from the busy area and take it to a suitable location. One of the possibilities being considered was to take it to ZooUnama to receive veterinary care.

A police officer explained that the appearance of wild animals in urban areas can occur because of the proximity between the city and natural environments.

“It’s its area. But, as nature expands into the city, they start appearing,” he explained.

Residents and visitors are advised not to approach, touch or attempt to capture the caiman. In cases like this, the recommendation is to keep a safe distance and contact specialized teams.
