In the rural area of Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, small farmers are resuming activities in their fields, planting and harvesting various crops such as manioc, bananas, pineapples and pitahaya. The amount of rainfall during the period is helping the crops to grow and the rise in river levels during the period is creating good prospects for transporting the produce. Last year's severe drought destroyed crops and left many river dwellers isolated with no way of transporting their produce due to low river levels throughout the state. With the rising waters, the 170 producers of the São Francisco do Caramuri community are optimistic. The lower Preto River, which cuts through the region, is beginning to show signs of normality. Local families depend on the tributary for access to large urban centres.
