The 2024 drought in Amazonas is considered the worst in history in terms of economic and social impacts, according to the State Civil Defense.
As of Thursday (3), the accumulated damages have already surpassed the numbers of 2023, which until then was recognized as the most severe drought in the state.
According to the Civil Defense, almost 770 thousand people are being affected by the drought, which led all cities in the state to declare a state of emergency.
Public and private losses, which in 2023 totaled approximately R$472 million, have already exceeded R$620 million in 2024, and the scenario may worsen as the drought persists.
In the hydrological context, the channels of the Alto, Médio and Baixo Solimões, Médio and Baixo Amazonas, Madeira, Purus and Rio Negro rivers are at critical levels.
Since the beginning of the year, the state government has been working to anticipate actions to combat the drought.
As part of these initiatives, it reported that it has already sent 202.1 tons of medicines and supplies to the municipalities affected by this year's severe drought.
The government also installed 36 water purifiers, 8 of which are directed to the Alto Solimões channel, and sent 700 water tanks to improve access to drinking water for riverside residents.
