BRASÍLIA - Brazil's Federal Police (PF) and the Brazilian Navy carried out a joint operation on Tuesday (July 7) against international drug trafficking in international waters off the coast of Suriname.
The operation was supported by U.S. authorities through the sharing of intelligence.
The cooperation involved the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the federal agency responsible for combating drug trafficking, and the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-South), a task force under the U.S. Southern Command.
The amount of drugs seized will be disclosed after authorities complete the inspection and weighing of the confiscated material.
The vessel and its crew were taken into custody for procedures established under Brazilian law and international cooperation agreements. According to the Federal Police, the investigation is ongoing to identify other individuals involved and determine the full circumstances of the case.
