Many of the families who live in the rural areas of Manaus have boating as their main means of transport. With the river drought that has plagued the Amazon, residents have had to struggle to make ends meet. The communities of Nossa Senhora de Fátima and Nossa Senhora do Livramento, which are located in the rural area of Manaus, have been affected by the river drought. The area used to be bathed by the stream known as "São José", the main way for residents to travel to the city to buy their supplies. However, with the drying up of the rivers in the Amazon, the igarapé has become just a small stream. The stretch that used to be travelled by residents in small boats, in a short time, now has to be done on foot, under the sun and over long distances.
