A video shows the moment when the crew of a fishing boat rescued five other fishermen who were shipwrecked at the mouth of the Oiapoque River on Wednesday (17). The men survived after settling on top of the boat, which was only one side out of the water. The accident happened in an area close to the municipality of Oiapoque, in the north of Amapá. Information about the shipwreck spread throughout the region, and it was only then that the Captaincy of Harbours became aware of the situation. According to the Captaincy, officials tried to contact the captain of the JR Pesca 1, but received no reply. Another fishing boat began searching on its own and found the five men on Wednesday morning. The image taken by one of the crew members at the time of the rescue shows the fishermen sitting on the only part of the boat that was out of the water. The Captaincy was notified by radio about the rescue and instructed the men to return to Oiapoque so that the victims could receive medical attention and provide information about the accident. Due to the distance from the site to the town centre, the castaways only arrived in Oiapoque on Thursday afternoon (18). The area where the boat sank is known for its waves. It is also a fishing route. According to the Captaincy, an enquiry will be launched to ascertain the causes of the accident.
