A study by the Environmental Sciences and Sustainability in the Amazon programme at Ufam, the Federal University of Amazonas, in conjunction with the Federal Police, on the origin of managed trees is being used to combat illegal deforestation in the Amazon. "The forestry origin document says, for example, that the wood came from the state of Rondônia. We're going to take samples from the container that was learnt and check that the origin is correct by comparing it with the tree's isotopic signature. If there is a difference at this point, it will be a way of presenting official reports. This way we can effectively combat deforestation and ensure that the wood is sold legally," explained Edinara Laís Vieira Capucho, a doctoral student at Ufam and a forestry engineer.
