RIO BRANCO, BRAZIL — A jaguar cub was rescued by the Fire Department near a home located along a highway in a rural area of Rio Branco, the capital of Acre state. The resident contacted authorities after dogs found the animal on the property on Monday (10).

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is considered a key species for maintaining ecological balance. As an apex predator, it helps regulate populations of other species and contributes to the health of ecosystems.

Beyond protecting wildlife, conserving the species is also linked to the preservation of important natural resources, including water and soil quality and biodiversity.

The cub had no visible injuries and was taken to the Center for the Screening of Wild Animals (Cetas), where it will undergo veterinary evaluation and medical examinations.

Classified as vulnerable to extinction in Brazil, the jaguar is considered one of the country's main symbols of biodiversity.
