The Federal Police (PF) arrested a man and rescued over 300 canaries this Thursday (7), at Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes International Airport, in Manaus.
The PF reported that the contents of the luggage were identified during a routine inspection, after which agents located the passenger.
He was already on board the aircraft when he was approached and taken to the Federal Police Regional Superintendence in Amazonas.
The suspect will be charged with receiving stolen goods and crimes under the Environmental Crimes Law.
The birds had been brought to the capital of the Amazonas state of Roraima, by bus, and were to be taken to São Paulo on a flight that left in the late afternoon, bound for Guarulhos International Airport.
The birds were seized and sent to Ibama on Thursday so that they can be treated and reintroduced into the wild.
An investigation has been opened to determine where the birds were taken from, what their destination was and who the other participants in the crime were.
