The Environmental Protection Area (APA) Caverna do Maroaga, is located at km 06 of the AM-240, a state road that gives access to the Balbina Hydroelectric Plant, within the limits of the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo, 117 kilometres from Manaus, capital of Amazonas-Brazil, on the BR-174 highway. The region is home to an area of 374,700 hectares of a set of caves, grottos and waterfalls, which form one of the most beautiful landscapes in the state. The APA is one of 42 Conservation Units (UC) managed by the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema). Due to the easy access from the capital, the place has become a popular tourist attraction to be close to nature and native species. To visit the Maroaga Cave, a guide is required to take visitors along a trail of about 600 metres through the forest. The maximum number of people that a guide can accompany is 10 visitors at a time.
