Nine helicopters were needed to identify areas degraded by miners in the Tapajós Environmental Preservation Area, in the state of Pará-Brazil, in the largest operation against illegal mining in the Amazon. Excavators, machines, dredges and camps were destroyed by federal agents who took part in the operation. The Tapajós Apa is highly targeted by prospectors who invade federal and indigenous lands in search of illegal gold extraction.
