To combat illegal mining in the state of Pará-Brazil, Ibama and ICMBio, with the support of the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police and the National Force, carried out an operation that destroyed several machines, dredges and camps used in environmental preservation areas.
"We realise that there is very advanced degradation. The streams and the main tributaries of the Tapajós River have all been taken over by mining. We noticed that the turbidity of the water is very high, flowing into the Tapajós River. Generating a great deal of pollution in what is one of the country's main rivers. The permanent preservation areas have been completely destroyed. Today these activities cause great environmental damage and are not properly regulated," said Hugo Loss, Ibama's coordinator of inspection operations.
