The Serra do Cantá is in the region of the municipality with the same name "Cantá". As in other areas of Roraima, it has been affected by forest fires caused by this year's severe drought in the state. Joiner Wallace Ribeiro, who lives at the foot of the mountain, gave an account of the causes of the fires. "There are fires practically every year. The fire starts at the rubbish dump in the municipality of Canta, and goes all the way round the Serra and spreads throughout the region," said Wallace. "The fire is too big and too close to the town's urban area, as well as the small houses at the foot of the mountain," said the joiner. "The animals run away from the fire and many of them burn to death - monkeys, pacas, armadillos. It makes you feel sorry for these animals. There have been years when many have been burnt to death and this is difficult," said Wallacw Ribeiro.
