River dwellers are already facing difficulties as the rivers dry up. Access to rural communities in the Alto Solimões region is being improvised. Small boats take residents to a certain point on the river. This is because some tributaries of the Solimões are unable to navigate because they are completely dry. The riverbank dwellers have to walk to the transport vehicles that take them to their communities. According to the state's civil defence, forty-two municipalities are in a state of emergency due to the drought affecting the Amazon region.
