In the São Marcos indigenous land, in the municipality of Pacaraima-RR, located on the border between Brazil and Venezuela, the out-of-control fire forced families to leave their homes in a hurry in the middle of the night. The flames consumed all the houses in the area. Residents suspect arson. Fifty-six indigenous firefighters are working to combat the flames inside the reserve areas. On Thursday (22), Roraima broke its record for hot spots in 2024. The state reached 1,691 hot spots in February. This is the highest mark for the period in the National Institute for Space Research's (INPE) historical series, which began in 1999. The figure surpasses the previous record of 1,347 in February 2007. Of the 15 municipalities in the country with the highest number of outbreaks in February, 14 are in Roraima.
