Access to communities in the municipality of Careiro da Várzea, in the metropolitan region, has been compromised by the drying up of the rivers in Amazonas. Many communities are isolated due to the low water levels. Small boats can reach up to a certain stretch. After that, passengers have to walk overland where the drought has reached the watercourse to continue their journey on another boat further on. According to the state civil defence, forty-two municipalities are in an emergency situation.
