The Freedom Palace in Manaus, also known as the Municipal Palace, is one of the oldest spaces in Manaus. The building, which for decades housed the Town Hall, combines architectural beauty with the city's origins. To visit it is to get to know modern art and, at the same time, to have a rare moment of observation of local archaeological remains. The palace dates back to 1871, when the foundation stone was laid. Five years later, it became the seat of government for the Province of Amazonas. After the Proclamation of the Republic in Brazil, it became the seat of the state government. It was also the residence of the provincial president (1874-1889) and the state governors (1889-1917). In 1917, it became the seat of Manaus City Hall. The Municipal Palace has only one floor, but its large rooms are divided into different sections that house permanent and temporary exhibitions.
