PORTO VELHO, BRAZIL - A joint operation led by Brazil's Federal Police on Thursday (25) targeted illegal mineral extraction and related crimes on the Madeira River. The operation was carried out in partnership with the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).

During Operation Iracema, authorities destroyed 29 dredges, boats and engines used in illegal mining activities. Videos recorded at the scene show thick black smoke rising after the explosions.

According to the Federal Police, a criminal investigation has been opened to establish the facts, identify those financing the illegal operations and hold those responsible accountable.

The Federal Police said illegal mining causes severe environmental damage. Toxic substances, including mercury, are used during the illegal extraction process and released into rivers.

According to authorities, the contamination harms wildlife and vegetation and poses serious health risks to people who rely on the river for their livelihoods. The environmental damage is often irreversible, affecting entire ecosystems as well as the rights of traditional communities living in the region.

The Federal Police have stepped up enforcement against illegal mining, particularly in the Madeira River basin in Rondônia, one of the areas most heavily affected by the activity.

Operation Iracema is part of ongoing efforts to protect the Amazon rainforest, preserve natural resources and enforce Brazilian environmental laws.
