BOA VISTA, BRAZIL – A Brazilian porcupine, locally known as ouriço-cacheiro, was rescued from the backyard of a home on Friday (24) in downtown Boa Vista, the capital of Brazil's northern state of Roraima. The wild animal was removed from the area to ensure its safety as well as that of nearby residents.

A resident spotted the animal on a neighboring property and called for assistance. He was advised to contact the police. The report was forwarded to the Independent Environmental Policing Company (Cipa), which dispatched a team to the scene.
Officers safely captured the porcupine and found that it had not been injured.

After the rescue, the animal was released into a remote area of dense forest. According to Cipa, the location was chosen because the species is not adapted to the lavrado, the natural tropical savanna ecosystem that predominates in much of Roraima.
