AMAZONAS, BRAZIL — On Thursday night (10), the Almirante Oliveira V suffered partial sinking near the municipality of Juruá, in the interior of Amazonas state.

Despite the seriousness of the accident and the ensuing panic, local authorities confirmed that all of the approximately 200 passengers and crew members were rescued alive and without serious injuries.

The vessel, which was traveling between the municipality of Carauari and the state capital, Manaus, collided with a submerged log in the river. The impact caused a crack in the wooden hull, allowing water to rapidly enter the vessel.

In addition to efforts by the Juruá municipal government and Civil Defense authorities to assist the victims, local residents rallied to provide donations of adult and children's clothing, hammocks, towels, personal hygiene items and blankets.

The passengers were taken to a municipal school, where they received support and assistance following the accident.
