MANAUS, BRAZIL — A severe storm accompanied by strong wind gusts, thunder and even hail hit the municipality of Manicoré in southern Amazonas state on Monday afternoon (Aug. 10). A video posted on social media shows a boat in the middle of the Madeira River being pulled under by the rough weather conditions.
The choppy river, stirred up by the storm, caused the boat to rock and capsize. Witnesses aboard another vessel recorded the incident on video. No one was killed.
According to the municipality's Meteorology Department, 22.8 millimeters (0.9 inches) of rain fell in just one hour, a volume equivalent to the average rainfall recorded throughout the month of August. The department said heavy rainfall of this intensity is unusual during this period.
