RONDÔNIA, BRAZIL — A female southern tamandua was rescued by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) this Monday (14) at the Federal University of Rondônia (Unir), in Porto Velho. The animal was clinging to a pillar in the outdoor area behind the institution's library.

The moment was recorded by student Erick Lebre. He said he went to the site out of curiosity, as he is always interested in seeing wild animals that appear in the region up close.

“Initially, people had said it was a sloth,” Erick said.

The definitive rescue was carried out by a team of environmental agents, who used appropriate equipment to safely remove the animal.

Regarding the rescue, Ibama said the animal underwent a clinical evaluation by a veterinarian from the Wild Animal Screening Center (Cetas). After the examinations, the results showed that the female was in perfect health, with no injuries or abnormalities. The animal was released in a suitable area and is doing well.
