RONDÔNIA, BRAZIL — A rodeo rider was thrown by a bull out of the competition area during a ride in the district of União Bandeirantes, in Porto Velho. Franciney Fernandes, 20, did not suffer serious injuries.

A video recorded by spectators shows the moment when the animal spins and throws the rider into the air. The competitor fell among tables and chairs next to a grandstand, away from the rodeo enclosure.

Franciney said the moment was filled with adrenaline. He said he was about to ride the bull Maestro, considered one of the rodeo’s most active jumpers, when he was caught off guard by the animal.

In the fall, the young man hit his head and was knocked unconscious.

“What happened was when he entered the ring. I went to open my leg to spur the bull and ended up losing my spurs. He pulled me forward and my leg went toward his horn. Then he went there where he threw me, out of the arena,” Franciney recalled.

Despite the scare, which he described as a “blessing in disguise,” the rodeo rider said he is doing well and that the incident served as motivation to continue practicing the sport.
