The launch of the campaign to make the theatre a UNESCO World Heritage Site began on Thursday (14) in Manaus. The Amazonas Theatre is one of the main symbols of the rubber boom in the Amazon. The building began construction in 1884 and was inaugurated on 31 December 1896 to meet the desires of the Amazonian elite of the time, who imagined a city on a par with the great cultural centres. Work on the campaign to make it viable has only just begun. The goals and objectives could take up to four years, according to the Amazonas Secretariat of Culture. The action will be carried out in conjunction with the state of Pará, which has the Peace Theatre, an architectural symbol built at the same time to achieve the same goal.
