Politicians from the northern region and representatives of the federal government are engaged in a heated debate over the recovery of the BR-319 motorway. The parliamentarians and the governors of the states where the road crosses are demanding that Ibama, the body responsible for environmental licences, resolve the impasse. The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, on the other hand, says that more studies are needed on the feasibility of the works, and especially on the preservation of the forest. Inaugurated in 1976, the road was completely paved, guaranteeing traffic and the journey time from Manaus to Porto Velho was estimated at 12 hours. Due to lack of maintenance, it was closed in 1988 and reopened sporadically. The motorway connects the states of Roraima and Amazonas to the rest of the country.
