Overflight shows the Amazon rainforest in the southern region of the state of Amazonas, being devastated by deforestation and illegal burning. According to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), among the ten cities with the largest area under deforestation alerts in the biome in 2023, four are in southern Amazonas. The region is known for the strong presence of illegal land grabbers and loggers. The consequence of this is criminal fires that destroy the forest and cover the sky with smoke. The district of Santo Antônio do Matupi, in Manicoré, and areas between Humaitá and Tapauá, cities in the interior of Amazonas, are the most affected by fire.
