AMAZONAS, BRAZIL – Designer and communications analyst Leandro Brandão, 30, came up with an unusual solution to reduce the heat and make his 10-year-old dog Maggie more comfortable inside her doghouse. The Amazon summer, which runs from July to October, has brought high temperatures to Manaus this year.
Brandão’s solution was to install components powered by solar energy. Two fans, similar to those used in computers, help reduce the heat inside the doghouse.
The fan installed at the bottom blows air into the space. The one positioned at the top removes hot air, functioning as an exhaust fan, according to the designer. The system currently operates without a battery.
Another measure adopted by the designer was to install a waterproof thermal blanket on the roof of the doghouse. The material allows the structure to be sprayed with water, helping reduce the temperature inside the space.
“Last year, she became ill a few times and, at first, we associated it with the heat. After consulting the veterinarian, she said it could be a combination of factors, but she did not rule out the possibility that it was caused by the high temperature,” Brandão said.
