The government of Rondônia published a decree declaring an emergency due to the 'critical' period of drought faced in the state.
The decree was published on Thursday (4) in the Official Gazette of the State of Rondônia (Diof).
In 2023, the Madeira River reached the lowest level ever recorded in history. Sandbanks and mountains of rocks appeared where it was previously possible to see only water.
Since then, experts have predicted an even more extreme drought in the state in 2024.
According to the Management and Operational Center for the Amazon Protection System (Censipam), on June 25th the city of Porto Velho completed a month without any rainfall recorded.
Residents face high temperatures and dry weather.
Monitoring carried out by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) also shows that there was no rainfall in June and July (so far) in the capital of Rondônia.
In the decree, the government of Rondônia considers forecasts that indicate prolonged low rainfall levels in the state due to the El Niño phenomenon.
The document also points to a significant decrease in river levels.
