RORAIMA, BRAZIL — An adult giant anteater was rescued after being found in a garden area in the rural area of Boa Vista on Monday (7). According to the Environmental Police, the animal had injuries to its paws.

The animal was restrained by officers from the Independent Environmental Policing Company (Cipa) inside an abandoned construction site next to a garden.

After the rescue, it was taken to the Wild Animal Screening Center (Cetas) of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).

The giant anteater is a mammal that can grow to 1.9 meters (6.2 feet) in length and weigh up to 40 kilograms (88 pounds) as an adult. The species feeds mainly on ants, termites, larvae and beetles and can consume up to 30,000 insects per day.
