The city of Chivay is part of the Arequipa region and is 3,635 metres above sea level. It has just over 7,000 inhabitants and is surrounded by mountains in the Andes. It's so cold there that even the cattle are protected. The people are welcoming and show off their traditions and source of income. Clothes in various shades of colour to protect against the cold. One of the leisure attractions in Peru's coldest areas is bathing in hot springs. In Chivay there is a spa with around six pools that receive water directly from the Sabancaya volcano, the only active volcano in the region. Tourists can enjoy a warm bath to ease the chill. The place is very popular at this time of year.
