Residents of the Jatuarana community on the left bank of the Amazon River, 40 kilometres from Manaus, are feeling the consequences of the severe drought that occurs at this time of year throughout the state. With the lake dry, families can only reach their homes by walking long distances. The very low level makes it difficult to navigate the canoes, which are the main means of transport for the riverside dwellers. In addition, there is concern about drinking water. With this situation in mind, a task force is distributing jerry cans free of charge to families. Many take hours to reach their homes with the unit they have received. The operation to distribute drinking water should continue until the end of the drought.
