Residents of the community of Jutuarana, in the rural area of Manaus, receive drinking water during the drought. The severe ebb and flow throughout Amazonas at this time of year has changed the local routine. With the level of the lake very low, it is impossible to navigate the canoes, the main means of transport for the river dwellers.
"Our friends who live in the community that doesn't have an artesian well have a hard time fetching or buying water from the riverbank because of the access," said farmer Narciso Nunes.
"When we have time, we go to the health centre to get chlorine to put in the water so that we can drink a healthy liquid," said fisherwoman Antônia Edilene.
"Doing our food shopping and bringing it back is very complicated due to the drought because everything is far away and we have no transport," said fisherwoman Camila Santos.
