BELÉM, BRAZIL - Residents alerted police after finding an ocelot that had been struck by a vehicle on the shoulder of a highway near a municipality in the interior of Pará state. The animal received initial care during the rescue operation and was taken to the University of the Amazon Zoo (ZooUnama) in Santarém, where it was placed under the care of the institution’s technical team for veterinary evaluation and treatment.

The ZooUnama team reported that the animal is an adult male ocelot currently receiving specialized treatment. Despite medication and the care provided, the animal’s condition is considered critical and requires constant monitoring.

The ocelot is a wild feline native to the Americas and frequently faces threats related to habitat loss and vehicle collisions on highways and roads near forested areas.
