The pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) is one of the largest freshwater fish on the planet. Native to the Amazon, it provides benefits to the ecosystem and communities that live from fishing. Its name comes from two indigenous terms pira, "fish", and urucum, "red", due to the colour of its tail. The pirarucu has a carnivorous feeding habit, feeding predominantly on items of animal origin and lives in still waters and lakes in the Amazon region. The Pirarucu also needs to breathe at the surface, a characteristic of the fish.
