AMAZONAS, BRAZIL — The international smuggling of mercury and the routes used to transport the substance into the country, particularly in the state of Amazonas, are under investigation by Brazil’s Federal Police. Officers carried out an operation at several locations across the state capital, Manaus, on Tuesday (June 2) to gather evidence related to the case.

The investigation began after the seizure, in April 2025, of two containers holding approximately 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of mercury, a toxic substance widely used in illegal gold mining areas. During the inquiry, investigators identified evidence suggesting the existence of a clandestine distribution network supplying illicit activities across the Amazon region.

During the operation, authorities executed two search and seizure warrants at private residences in Manaus. The suspects may face charges of mercury smuggling and transportation of toxic substances.
