An improvised dam has been built by residents of Catalão to keep some of the water from a tributary of the Solimões River dammed, and thus keep their houses afloat. The community is in the municipality of Iranduba, in the metropolitan region of Manaus. This year's drought is so severe that the riverbank dwellers have to walk where the river is dry to get drinking water. The riverbank dwellers are also fetching low-quality water in small and large buckets for other tasks from an improvised source. According to the state's civil defence, forty-two municipalities are in a state of emergency due to the drought affecting the Amazon region.
